Hiriketiya Beach is the extreme cut of heaven on Sri Lanka’s renowned worldwide south coast. It is called “Hiri” among expats and Sri Lankans and is a horseshoe-bay that was once a languid angling town, neighboring the southern town of Dickwella.
Hiriketiya Shoreline is the extreme cut of heaven on Sri Lanka’s renowned worldwide south coast. A little, adjusted cove sponsored by bended palm trees and thick tropical wilderness, with slamming waves rolling in being carved up by nearby surfers and covered up cafes and guesthouses tucked among nature, it’s some place you never need to take off.
While you might have heard of Weligama or Mirissa, Hiriketiya Beach has become the next place to be on Sri Lanka’s coast.
How to Get to Hiriketiya Beach
Hiriketiya Beach is located off the main road just outside of Dickwella on the south coast of Sri Lanka. Unless you take private transportation, you’ll have to aim for Dickwella when trying to get to Hiriketiya, as the beach itself is not serviced by public transport.
Dickwella has a bus station that is linked to Matara further along the coast. From Dickwella to Hiriketiya, it will cost you about 300 LKR in a tuk tuk.
Matara is the major transport hub of the south coast towns. It has a train station and bus station, with a highway expressway bus station for Colombo as well. You’ll likely find yourself changing transport in Matara if you’re coming from Colombo or Galle.
From Ella and the hills, you’ll only be able to travel by bus to the south coast. Unless you opt for Uber, PickMe or a shared taxi.
From Colombo to Hiriketiya
You can catch the train from Colombo Fort to Matara, with around 7 departures per day and taking around 4 hours. You’ll then have to head to the Matara bus station and take a bus to Dickwella, leaving regularly and taking around 1.5 hours.
If not, take a highway express bus to Matara from outside Colombo, which leaves every hour or so and takes about 3 hours. From there, you’ll still have to take a bus to Dickwella.
When to go to Hiriketiya?
The best time to visit Hiriketiya is considered to be November to April. This time of the year comes with moo precipitation and calmer oceans which give the idealized climate to investigate and learn to surf. In any case, the climate is marvelous throughout
October to April so don’t let the “rainy season” halt you from going by in the other months, since the shoulder seasons tend to be distant, less swarmed, and hectic.
Sri Lanka is known for its 2 seasons. May to September brings with it the south-west monsoon season and November to March is the north-east monsoon season.
However, Hiriketiya appears to be a special case for this run-the-show as the waves are incredible all year round. I went by Hiriketiya Shoreline in October and had a culminating climate each single day, be that as it may, the shoreline was swarmed with scores of surfers hitting the water all through the day.
Things to do in Hiriketiya Beach
Surfing
Hiriketiya beach (also called Hiri) is one of the great surf havens of southern Sri Lanka with a beach break and a reef duo that can cater to all levels. It is a great small bay to chill out or surf. The water is beautifully clear, and there are a few good bars located near the beach. You can rent a board and if you need you can get a lesson directly from the guys on the beach.
Swimming
Hiriketiya Beach is a bay, which makes it a sheltered and safe place for swimming. The waves are smooth and not rough. In the center of the beach, there is much less coral so it is very safe to swim and play in the waves.
Snorkeling
Snorkeling is another well-known water movement at Hiriketiya Shoreline, particularly amid the months when the water is at its clearest. The shoreline has pockets where the marine life is wealthy, allowing seeing an assortment of fish and now and then indeed turtles. Snorkeling gear can be rented from shops close to the shoreline. For those new to snorkeling, guided tours are also available.
